He was all happy and sweet trotting off with the vet tech,

Doesn't that kill you?  I start tearing up when I watch Willow trot off all happy not realizing she's getting stuck with yet another needle when she gets there.  They are so naive and innocent.  Broken Heart

That's the beauty of dogs...it doesn't matter what happens at the vet's, as long as they get a little loving, & maybe a treat after the bad stuff happens, they don't care & are happy to go again.

Fine is good, Karen. If there was any bad surprise, they would have told you something, I'd think.

If they gave him morphine, he is probably so drugged up that he has no idea of who he is and where he is right now. He'll have a good night and get a good check up tomorrow. He will perhaps even be able to go take his first piddle there under their supervision. Be a little prepared for how different his leg will look without hair and with stitches/staples. What medications are they sending home ?

Continued good vibes for the Bugs man. Have a safe trip back home with him.

Karen, I'm so glad the surgery is over and he's doing ok.  I agree completely with Nathalie. Sending good vibes for Bugsy and for you.  He's most likely snoring away, so try and get some rest tonight.  Hugs.

They really don't get strung out like we do -- she KNOWS she's gonna get stuck Lori -- but she knows she'll get **attention** and that makes it ok.  Cos she knows they're happy to see her ... she's extremely willing to put up with the pain in exchange for the positive attention.

They aren't too dim to realize -- they DO pair those things mentally and they *KNOW* what's gonna happy -- they literally are just able to make the mental exchange and be fine with it.

One of the many reasons most dogs are better "adjusted" than we humans are.  WE hold grudges and play the angles too much!!

I am trying to not visualize him in the kennel all cut up

And therein is wisdom.  Rather they've sedated him so he gets good sleep and his body can HEAL.  Then you'll pick him up and he'll be happy.  Don't ask for pain meds -- not that you want him IN pain, but pain is the best weapon nature has to keep him more sedentary.  If he feels too goo he'll be too apt to over-do.

Holler if I can help you with anything -- you have my number i think?  I really never mind --

You might find chamomile tea a better help than you'd believe.  It's soothing to the tummy (and don't be surprised if he's RAVENOUS for water -- the anesthesia/sedative combo can do that sometimes, and if he's been sleeping heavy he could be a tad dehydrated.) -- but it really can take the edge off and help them generally relax and just feel a bit better all over.  It's comforting somehow.  It's not a major pain reliever - it's just a little extra help.  And if you can put the soggy herbs in his food all the better!

Callie, as I was reading your post I thought at first you were suggesting chamomile tea for her and not Bugsy!  LOL, I guess it wouldn't hurt her either.  :-)

    Re: Tomorrow is Bugsy's TPLO

Thanks everyone - he is home now Big Smile There was no other damage in his knee so it was all fairly straight forward.

He is doing very well and is VERY happy to be home.  Apparently he removed his Fentanyl patch - the tech was sort of embarrassed to tell me, I explained that I wasn't surprised.

Typical of him he hasn't peed since he did here yesterday, but I was glad that he did eat while there.  He came in to his 'room' and had a large drink of water and after some butt wiggling and kissing he went into his crate and is fast asleep.

We have a ton of meds to give him and the first 10-12 days he is restricted to potty breaks and his room.  After the staples come out we can start short walks.

All the techs loved him and said his personality was bigger than him - goodness knows what tricks he was up to with them.

edit to add that it gave me a sense of relief when he went off with the girl so happily.  He can be prone to anxiety (understatement) so the fact he wasn't anxious or stressed was wonderful

Of course the techs loved him.  He prolly planted a big ole wet one right on them & they were putty in his paws. :)

    I'm soooooooo glad he's home!
