    Texas Shelter Disaster

I got this from someone who is on an animal disaster response team in New England:

Shelter Disaster in Texas. - FIRE - 115 dogs and cats killed. CenTex Humane Society located at 5501 Clear Creek Rd., Killeen TX 76549, phone #254-526-6200. They are the only no-kill shelter in the Central Texas area. They have a web page that gives a whole lot more info at: centexhumanesociety.com Please Help

Would appreciate if any of you in Texas can verify, and maybe then circulate the appeal for assistance.

Heartbreaking.  Thanks for the heads up.  I'm sending this on and sending a donation.  I can't imagine the horror for the animals and the shelter employees.

Jackie - I'm trying to figure out how close this is to Rita -- how close would this be to Austin?? (I know she works with a "Central Texas" something shelter but "central texas" would be a vast area)

Killeen is about an hour Northwest of Austin, straight up I 35.  Central Texas is a huge area.

This takes you to the paypal donation page of the shelter's website.  They have had a huge outpouring of support from the community according to their website.  I know what you mean about not being able to read the story.  I did and it's too sad.

    Re: Texas Shelter Disaster

I've got a call in to Rita (she's the one that contacted me about Tink, and she's the one who does epi dog rescue, etc.) -- I have a feeling this is the shelter she works with a LOT and if so, Rita will know specific needs.

Re: Texas Shelter Disaster (News from Rita)

Oh man -- I just got an email from Rita -- TINK WAS FROM KILLEEN!!!!  This is what Rita says:

    "Callie,

The shelter is in the Killeen area and I haven’t worked with them d
irectly myself but I do work closely with the Killeen Animal Control office
r Sherva, she’s actually become a good friend of mine.  Kille
en is where your beloved Tink came from and where we get some of the worst
cases we have ever seen due to the huge military population.  So this shelt
er is a huge loss and needs to be brought back as soon as possible.

The local rescues have a van going up with food from our food bank, crates,
blankets, towels, whatever we could get together and of course some money.
All the animals that survived are now in foster care with other rescues o
r in vet care so they are safe.

So now they are cleaning up and trying to put together another shelter.

They are posting updates on their website http://www.centexhumanesociety.com/fire110109.shtml and donations can be made directly there but you can als
o contact a Mona Bubar at 254/547-6018 or 254/630-8240.  It is my understan
ding they can of course use money but also Lowes and Home Depot giftcards c
    an also be used.

This is so tragic and my heart just breaks.  Any and all shelters are neede
d but Killeen is such a depressed area that this one especially so.  Every
    cent will be appreciated.

    Hugs R
    "

I've never dealt with this group, but they are only about an hour away from me.  I am hoping to go volunteer for clean up on Saturday!

Wow, that's great.  I'm sure they can use the help.

Oh my goodness, that is absolutely horrific! I, too, will see if I can donate some money to them as well. How tragic. :(
