Need some info on Pepto for upset tummy - rather urgent

Keela was given (as treat) some rather greasy foods today around 4 pm. She is a little food hog so she didn't turn it down. It was several french fries, a few bites of the bread and several bites of the fried chicken strips from Sonic. I don't think it was the amount she ate, just that she ate something that she doesn't normally get. I let her have a few green beans at dinner so she wouldn't think she was being starved while everyone else ate.

She just looks uncomfortable. I want to give her some pepto, just not sure of the dose. All I've got is the liquid form.Unless someone has another idea what to give her to help with the tummy ache, I'll go with the Pepto.

I know this should go in health, but this area gets more traffic.

    Thanks,

    Amy

Do not give her any more food tonight or tommorow morning. After this, say tommorow afternoon and night just feed boiled rice. Offer in 3 or 4 small meals tommorow. Make sure she does drink lots of water though, as you dont want her to become dehyrated. For right now, just monitor your dog to make sure its nothing serious.

Really, you shouldnt give your dog people food at all. My dogs get hardly any and they live very happy, healthy lives. Your dog wont feel "left out" if they dont get any.

When Shooter gorges himself, & then feels lousy, I give him 2.5cc of pepto.  He weighs 8-9 pounds.

I didn't give it to her. It was someone else. And letting them eat 'human' food doesn't hurt them. Now greasy food - isn't good for them (or us), I know that and they don't get it. If you'll notice from my post I said it was not something she normally eats. But they get fruit and veggies all the time, as well as meat (both raw and cooked).

That's about Keela's weight. We'll see if she drinks the Pepto as easily as she does Benadryl. She's a weird dog when it comes to food/meds. She'll eat it before it eats her- that's her style! Off to the Pepto bottle!

    Thanks!

I think I found Keela's nemesis! LOL I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't laugh at her, but that expression on her face when I syringed it into her mouth!

    Keela says "BLEH!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I say thank you! Though I am totally expecting some nasty poo and possible urp by morning.

Sorry - have been 'out' for a couple of hours.

I *only* give Pepto when there's really severe diarreha.  For just stomach discomfort I use chamomile (make the tea pretty strong, and add the soggy herbs to their next food.  But either use a syringe or you can add a touch of broth or honey to it and many dogs will drink it willingly)

GOOD food is food.  "scraps" are things that ought to be thrown away.  You're absolutely right - greasy french fries are things NO BODY should really eat.  *SMILE*

I cringe when I hear "human food" There is food.  Some food is processed and dried into kibble or canned for a human's convenience in feeding a pet.  That's not my choice (nor is it stardancinminpin's)  But let's see -- a typical supper for my dogs  might be ground beef, a sardine, turnip greens, green beans, sweet potato, white potato, okra and maybe some bok choy.   Nothing greasy, nothing fried.  Just good food.   Same thing the humans might eat -- *maybe* a different presentation *grin*.

I know I've been told by our vet it's OK to give a Pepsid.  I don't know how much for a dog that size though.  I hope everything is fine.

I've never used Pepto.  I can't stand to look at it!

Also, sometimes I give Willow a little yogurt or milk and that's seems to help her too.  It's not scientific, just something that I've noticed helps some.  (Assuming you don't have issues with dairy)

I think the dose is somewhere around 0.5cc/5lbs. I think. 2.5 should be just fine.

My dogs hate the liquid and will spit it out. Is it okay to give the tablets, which I always have on hand for myself?

I didn't know they made a tablet... we've always given the liquid. I know you can give the tablet form of pepcid

Re: Need some info on Pepto for upset tummy - rather urgent

Callie, I thought about the chamomile tea, but she just looked so blah. She almost looked 'puffy'. I was almost afraid that she was bloating, but I think the combination of salt and grease was just getting to her. I've been keeping a watch on her tummy, as well as palpating it - lots of gurgling noises, and the noxious gas has started. I may let her sleep with me tonight so I can keep an eye on her though.

I had to go to my chiropractor today (still dealing with a majorly screwed up back), and since Piper has to go to the Houston vet Friday, I figured I would let Keela go with me today. The weather is so nice that her sitting in the car isn't dangerous like it is during the summer. She loves to be the center of attention and I haven't had many opportunities lately to take them out for socializing. We stopped to see some old friends, and she was the bell of the store and loved every minute of it. A few tidbits of french fries doesn't bother her, but they got overly generous with the treating before I could put a stop to it. Next time the treat bag will be firmly replacing their 'offerings'. Their tidbits were full on french fries I realized instead of the pea sized treating they normally get. Live and learn. I just wish Keela would remember what gorging does to her, because this is a dog that will readily eat herself into a major problem any chance she gets.

If she isn't better by morning or refuses breakfast, we'll head to the vet. I've got to pick up Jezzy's pre-dental antibiotic tomorrow anyway. What's one more line on the vet bill for this week? Maybe Keela feels left out of the let's go to the vet week that Jezzy and Piper have started? LOL

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. Keela stills says 'yuck, bleh!!!!!!' to pepto!
