    Kitten biting

Any ideas how I should go about keeping Dr. Acula from biting? He has been biting since I got him and it hurts especially when he adds the claws. He is not being aggressive but he plays rough but it hurts. He bites anything and everything. I will see if I can either clip or dremel his claws.

Try to keep something close by to redirect the kitty.  Do the same thing you would do with a biting puppy....let him know it hurt; say no; then redirect.  Definately need to regularly clip those claws.  He'll get used to the procedure....Mama always wins is my philosophy when it comes to clipping kitty claws.  Big Smile

    Re: Kitten biting

Rough kittens are usually kitten that were 'singly' raised - without a mom or litter mates to tell them the are playing wrong (just like pups).

The kitten I have now (Bottle raised) is a biter. She usually does this late at night, on the bed. So when she gets crazy, she gets kicked off the bed and is not allowed back on unless she can play nice. She's learning... slowly. It's a behavior they usually grow out of in a few months...

My kitten Tempo is a crazy play biter too.  You can redirect with a toy or sometimes blowing on them helps too.  But, sometimes I've blown a tornado at him and he keeps going, so it depends.

    Re: Kitten biting

He is driving me insane!!! I can't do anything to him because he continues. I have tried redirecting with toys and he ignores and pounces on my hands. He has started to bite my face and comes at a full leap, jumps bites, and scampers off. I say no and he stops I try to reward by petting and he pounces on my hand. I will try taking him off the bed when he is biting. Its not like he doesn't have toys to play with he has plenty its just that fingers grab his attention, literally. What ever finger movement I do he is on it. I wish he would could play with other cats, I have another foster that I found in Concord when I went she has a clean bill of health.

ETA: Forgot to mention that if I am typing on my laptop he will pound on them.....

    Re: Kitten biting

When he has been a wild little kitty and then you try to pet him, because he stopped for a moment, that is probably just getting him wound up all over again. Kittens are a bundle full of energy and very easily stimulated to get wild and crazy. Perhaps a kitty condo to put him in, for time outs, for you to be free of him pouncing on you. Put him in there with toys and some kitty nip, water and a bed. You can feed him in there too, so that he gets comfortable with it. I had one that I used for 4 young kittens that I'd found. No way was I going to have them running around the house whenever they wanted. They would have torn the place to pieces and driven the rest of the animals totally insane....me as well. I also have an enclosed porch and would let them out there for play times. I'd also let them in the house for short periods, when I could dedicate myself to paying attention to keeping them out of trouble. We'd go out with them on the porch and spend time with them as well. So they go lots of attention, just that they got it on our terms. Also when they were in the condo, I could easily get one of them to hold them and love on them. They were just a bit on the feral side and so I wanted to handle them a lot, to make sure they became very accustomed to people. I was planning on only fostering them. I'd hold each one seperately and try to be very calm and gentle and wait until they relented and they would finally relax and start purring. Course, when they were all out, it was a bit of a challenge some times trying to get them back in their kitty condo. Have you tried a lazer light to play with him and get some of the crazy energy out of him. Just if you do, make sure you don't get it pointed in his eye. They do love the lazer light game though. Ours come into the living room, about the time we often play with it at night, and just sit watching and waiting. They are a riot chasing it.

You can use that leaping up on you to teach the cat to jump up on command. We have two of ours that will do that. They jump right up the front into our arms. Course that is a bit of a problem, if you are not expecting it, and all of a sudden poor kitty wants attention and tries to jump up, thinking he will be caught, and falls back down kerplunk on the floor.

Our kittens are about 1 1/2 yrs old now and just the sweetest cats one could ever want. Yup they are here to stay.

    I'm not a puppy here. I've been around i-dog (aka dog.com) since, I believe it was, 2001.

    Re: Kitten biting

What I need is one of this: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753624

Right now he stays crated at night and during the day when I work too but as soon as I get off work I let him out. My sister plays with him as soon as she gets home from school too. I will have to definetly try a laser I had one before for Neko and he really loved it, I know this little monster will be thrilled with one. Thanks for the input.
