Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

My nephew is 9yrs old he's in 3rd or 4th grade I think lol don't remember. Well yesterday he asked his teacher if he could use the restroom teacher told him no that he had to wait because you can now only get 2 passes to go to the restroom, my nephew told him he couldn't hold it he told him no. Well my nephew peed his pants because he couldn't wait he didn't tell the teacher, I guess it was time for his next class my nephew has asthma so he asked to go to the nurse since he has asthma and its bad the teacher let him go.

He told the nurse what happened they gave him clothes and didn't even call my sister to tell her he had an accident. It's 3:30 my sister goes to pick the kids up and my nephew comes out with someone else's clothes on and my sister asked him what happened he told her my sister went off on them.  Not only not allowing him to use the restroom but the other day he came home hurting because he had to hold his piss because they wouldn't allow him to use the restroom.

The teacher told my nephew the new rule is 2 passes a day to the restroom because someone has been flooding the bathrooms.  I can see if my nephew was in high school or maybe even junior high school but primary school. These are little kids. So my sister is talking to someone and she told my sister it was just a suggestion not a rule she also told my sister that if kids can't hold it maybe theirs a medical problem my sister told her you having my son hold his pee in is gonna give him a medical problem she even told her he came home in pain the other day because he wasn't allowed to go.

My nephew is embarrassed he doesn't even wanna go back to school he's really not sure if anyone knows but he's embarrassed.  My sister wants to call the school board I think she should.  I feel so bad for my honeybee as I call him. I can't believe they expect kids to only go to the restroom twice a day during school.

I find this absurd, but "going off on" them is not going to solve anything.  Everyone's metabolism is different, child or not.  Do they expect diabetic children to hold it, too?  This sounds like a prescription for a lawsuit.  If I were your sister, I would consult with an attorney and get advice on constructing an appropriate letter to the school department to ask that they rescind this requirement.  You would think that a simple security camera would be a better solution to the problem of flooding the bathrooms.

Yes her going off wasn't the way to go but she was extremely upset and angry when she came over for my birthday and told me what happened she was telling me and just started crying because of what happened she is mad, angry, upset about the whole thing.

When my sister told the lady in the office that his teacher told her son this was the new rule the lady said oh it wasn't a rule it was a suggestion to all the teachers to only allow kids to go twice a day.

I know what about diabetic kids or even girls I got my period in the 4th grade are they suppose to only go twice a day when they are on that. Its ridiculous what happened and what they we're suggesting to do.

I feel really bad for him

I don't this what happened should of happened either.  If a kid says they got to go, they got to go.

But, on the other hand, I'm wondering if something isn't up with your nephew since he needed to pee three times??  That just seems like a lot for a kid just sitting in class.  I'm not saying I'm right, just a thought though.

Re: Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

We ran into a problem like that earlier this year with one of my kids.  DS's school does block scheduling, so he is in the same class for an hour & forty-five minutes.  They are supposed to get a restroom break an hour into the class.  One of his teachers decided that she didn't have to allow the kids to take a break during her class.  DS asked to go the the restroom three times after being in her class for over an hour.  She told him no each time.  After the third time, he decided to pee in the trash can.  I would have prefered him walk out of class, but that wasn't how he chose to handle it.  The teacher, obviously, sent him to the principal, who immediately called me.  The principal, teacher, school superintendent, my attorney, & I had a very animated meeting.  When all was said & done, it was made very clear that this particular teacher was to adhere to the normal bathroom breaks, & that if my DS needed to go more frequently, that he would be allowed to.

Both of our kid's schools offer message boards for the parents.  You might look to see if your nephew's school offers that.  It's very nice to see what other parents think about the two bathroom breaks a day...

Re: Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

Where I teach and for a third or fourth grader 2 times a day should be sufficient.  I am just a sub right now (so according to what teachers leave me, they give 2 breaks per day), but a teacher can typically tell if a child really has to go or is doing it to just get out of class.  Honestly, two times a day should be enough if they aren't allowed water bottles in class, however if a child asks and it is a true emergency, I'm not going to make them hold it.  Typically my kids go at some point before lunch and then after lunch.  There are times when kids will ask to go.  I'll ask them if it is an emergency, if they say yes, then they can go.  No problem!  However, if it is a child who gives me problems in the classroom, then I know he or she will give me problems alone in the hallway or the bathroom.  For the younger kids, they typically have bathroom breaks three to four times (although rarely 4) a day.  I would think  this teacher was trying to follow the rules that the school put out there...and then there's the well you let that kid go three times why not me?  However, the teacher should have an idea of who is causing the bathroom troubles and be holding back on those people.  The teacher should have made sure this was not an emergency before making this decision.  Some kids just need to go more than others and there needs to be special circumstances given to some kids.

Re: Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

Personally, I think if people didn't make such a big deal of it, the kids wouldn't.  They'd perhaps find some other way to aggravate teachers, but at least it wouldn't impact other kids as much.  Embarrassment can have lasting effects (everyone in my class always remembered Patty who pee'd on her chair in fourth grade - imagine being Patty).  So, in my opinion, you provide breaks, on request, and inform parents if it gets to be too much.  You put cameras in the bathrooms, or you hire a hall/bathroom monitor.  But, you don't tell a diabetic kid, a normal kid who drank a second glass of juice at breakfast, or a young woman having her menstrual period that the bathroom is off limits.

no he had already used 1 pass earlier in the day so the teacher told him no because he only had 1 pass left for the rest of the day. these are little kids I'm an adult I know I couldn't go from 9am to 3:30pm only twice a day to the bathroom lol

See the school doesn't know who's flooding the bathrooms so they are taking it out on everyone.  I know there are kids who say oh I gotta go to the bathroom but really wanna get out of class obviously my nephew wasn't one as he had an accident. Now he has to be embarrassed at school because of the teacher denying him just sad. Kids now a days are cruel to other kids I hope no one found out.

Re: Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

Having been in this situation myself as a child, I would definitely say that his parents, the teacher, and the principal need to have a sit down. We didn't know it at the time, but it was a medical problem that prompted me needing to go to the bathroom so much. We also had someone flooding the bathrooms, and their take was to not allow anyone to go during class either.

They need to have some policy in place to allow children that need to go more often - to go. Plain and simple. Doctor's will tell you that it isn't healthy to have to hold it. And that teacher ought to be ashamed of herself! And if they do start allowing him to go more often, I hope she doesn't single him out and make him feel bad about that. Kids are heartless and scars like that last a lifetime.

Hope it works out for the best. I'll be thinking of them.

Man, I can only say that I'd be in a world of sh*t if I was limited to twice a day. Big Smile Like Anne said, everyone's metabolism is different.  Everyone doesn't have the same size bladder, everyone doesn't consume the same amount of liquids. I drink a lot of water and for me, going every couple of hours isn't unusual. I know ... TMI. Embarrassed

Just another reason to loath our school system.  I had rather screwed up bowels all through my middle school through high school years do to constantly having to hold in past what was healthy.  I had block schedule so the classes were 2 plus hours and we had like five minutes to get from one class to the next which isn't much time to get from one end of the school in crowded hallways, get your books out of your locker, and use the restroom... especially considering the girls bathrooms were often lucky if they had two working stalls... -___-

Re: Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

Given all the commercials out there for frequently peeing and irritable bowels I think an adult populated workplace would be sued fortwith for such a policy. Why then ask children who have smaller bladders, and just as much stress...ESPECIALLY once they KNOW they CANNOT, go. I mean..hello...scratch your nose and you will get detention...doesn't YOUR nose, start to itch??

Re: Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

Well I'll admit, I abused the system... I got doctor's notes for all three of my kids to be allowed to use the bathroom as needed... My youngest for his asthma (the meds ya know...) my daughter for frequent UTI's (which she was having until we got her note) ... and my oldest for muscle issues. My kids knew not to abuse the priviledge and I even asked the teachers to ever so kindly let me know if they were using the restroom excessively so I could be aware of any problems.

Re: Only letting kids use the restroom twice a day at school.

I don't think that's abuse..I think the system itself is bordering on abuse lol.

I mean the ONE SURE WAY to make a kid have to go to the bathroom three times in a day...is to tell them they can ONLY go...twice. You know? and they won't be faking either. I mean put me someplace and tell ME I cannot go pee for xyz hours and I will have to go...and for real. The powers of suggestion and reverse psychology are at their peak with kids I think.

And hello school staff...if the toilets are flooding...and you have a PASS with a TIME on it...shouldn't you be able to narrow down who was likely to have done it? DUH...address the problem with the problem causers...not the entire school.

So true Gina!  On a normal day I usually don't even go once at work, so I go when I wake up and then after I get home.  But now if I go to a movie and drink the same amount of caffeine, I am worried about having to go and missing a good part, so I get up and go once or twice in 2 hours.
