Re: Do you feed your dog before or after yourself?

My dogs have their own mealtimes that are nowhere near our mealtimes. They get breakfast before we leave for work..I don't eat breakfast. And they get fed again before bed. So, I suppose in theory we do eat in front of hungry dogs (since three of them are ALWAYS hungry) but no one begs...it's a no no here.

I'm not saying dogs are children,

You mean dogs are not children?  Wink

Gibby eats about the same time each day within reason.  On my work days earlier....but he eats when he first gets up...I do not.

He eats his lunch around 11:30-12:00...I do not.

He eats his dinner around 5. I do not. But sometimes we eat our dinner earlier......and then we eat first.

I don't follow any set feeding rule for myself or my dogs. I don't think that my dogs make any connection between when they eat and when I do

Me, too.  I think my dogs "get" that *I* control the resources, regardless of when I choose to parcel them out.

Re: Do you feed your dog before or after yourself?

I think my dogs make a connection between when they eat and when we eat.

We feed ours after we eat, but not because we believe in the dominance theory. I don't eat breakfast and I feed them in the morning, so I get showered and ready, I feed them and let them out then I take off for work. At night, we are busy doing other things, cleaning, rockband, etc. right when we get home, then we will eventually eat our dinner around 7-8 and then feed the dogs. I find it easier to feed them once we are relaxing and not busy doing stuff.

Sadie has this routine down though - she knows that after we eat, she gets fed. It doesn't matter what time we eat, but once we are done if we don't feed her, she will start scratching in her bowl and kidney beaning upside down in front of us until we feed her. She will not do this before we eat. So I think there is some connection there. I think it's just a routine thing though.

We tend to feed our dog before we eat. I think it helps calm her down and she tends to beg less when she has a full belly!

Re: Do you feed your dog before or after yourself?

Didn't read the whole thread but decided to respond.  My dogs are fed first because it's convenient for me to do that.  They certainly know that I provide their food and all must go to their "dinner" spots to get fed.  Each remains sitting until released.  They are only released when all bowls are on the floor.

With 4 dogs, there has to be some kind of order.

I believe in dominance but people like to include it more on stuff that really does not make any difference

    My dog eats first
