Liesje:For me, personally, I would never have a baby here b/c I guess it's not really a "home". We've just lived in small rentals/apartments with paper thin walls. I can hear the guy next door peeing. The thought of having a baby in a place that has never really been "home" with random people in the same building just kinda grosses me out, to be frank! I think I'd rather give birth in the woods in my backyard, more space and more privacy for sure.
That makes complete sense to me.
Had another thought - do you have birth centres there? We have them here, and I would like to go that route this time if doing it at home is not possible. It's like a halfway house between the hospital and your own home... less hospital-y, but with the reassurance of trained staff on hand to support and monitor you, and get you the care you need should complications arise. Seems ideal to me! (Having a lot of stuff done to our house right now, so it's a bit "building site-y", can't imagine trying to relax and birth a baby in the middle of it!)
Liesje:If I do end up getting pregnant, I'll do what my acquaintances did and tour all the hospitals here, pick the one I am most comfortable with.
It's definitely "buyer beware" I think.... it's not just the facility itself you need to be comfortable with, it's the policies, procedures, the choices they offer... Sobering thought: the US spends more on maternal care than any other country, but it's still the riskiest of all the developed nations for giving birth. I suspect that has something (a lot?) to do with the high rate of c-sections.... 1 in 3 and rising?!
