Re: TMI Poll for moms: c-section or natural?

I'm not frightened of childbirth (no matter where the child comes out) but I do have a medical issue that makes it a possibility that a c-section might be necessary.  My doctor does not push for it, but I'm aware that the possibility is there.  I think a baby would rather come out the abdomen than have a mother bleed outWink If I have  choice, I will most likely opt for a c-section, rather than risk an emergency situation. But, since we are not having kids yet, I have a bit of time before that is a concern, and will certainly discuss it with the doctor.

That said, vaginal births aren't always kind to the baby. Someone at work had a baby early this summer and they needed forceps (after about 24 hours), her cute little wee one still has scars 5 months later. It may be the natural way, but it doesn't mean that issues cannot occur.

So you are more likely to have issues later in life with pee and poo.

Is it not true that age and physical fitness play a large part in this, and that older women who have never had children have also had pee/poo incontinence?

Or am I thinking of pelvic floor problems, and are they not the same thing?

Nope it is an entirely different issue, the damage to the muscle of the sphincters has nothing to do with how fit you are or how old you are. Pelvic floor issues are an entirely different, but equally annoying problem ;) There are lots of papers in the colorectal literature about anal sphincter problems and rectal canal changes after vaginal childbirth......and they freak me out lol.

I'm late to the conversation, but I haven't been on in a while. I had a section for Addisen. The induction didn't work so 17 hours later, I was rolled into the OR. By that point, I was a nervous wreck, so I didn't care what happened as long as it was over lol. If I had to go natural, I would, but honestly, I didn't have a bad experience with a section.
Can I have my 4000-something posts back? Pretty please?

That's how I felt, too.  Not a bad experience at all.  I was in labor for 22 hrs. with #1 and if the doctor had come in and said he was going to cut my head off and pull him up through my neck, I would have said *right on.*

Don't get me wrong; if you (general) genuinely feel that being at home would FRIGHTEN you, because if it goes wrong you're up a certain creek without a certain instrument, then maybe being in a hospital is the best place, where you will be LESS frightened.  Plus, *IF* there is good breastfeeding support at the hospital, that is a strong reason to take advantage of that facility and be in the right place where you can have hands on assistance *immediately, should you need it!

For me, personally, I would never have a baby here b/c I guess it's not really a "home".  We've just lived in small rentals/apartments with paper thin walls.  I can hear the guy next door peeing.  The thought of having a baby in a place that has never really been "home" with random people in the same building just kinda grosses me out, to be frank!  I think I'd rather give birth in the woods in my backyard, more space and more privacy for sure.

But take that with a grain of salt, since I've never been pregnant and likely never will be.  My mom had some bad pregnancies and horrible postpartum depression (and she has a super high pain tolerance, has never been down or depressed in any other context).  So bad that she stopped having kids even though she wanted more.  I know that's not a guarantee that things would be the same way for me, but since I don't feel that maternal instinct and we have been pledged financial support from DH's family if we choose to adopt, I think we'll go that route.

If I do end up getting pregnant, I'll do what my acquaintances did and tour all the hospitals here, pick the one I am most comfortable with.

That makes complete sense to me.

Had another thought - do you have birth centres there?  We have them here, and I would like to go that route this time if doing it at home is not possible.  It's like a halfway house between the hospital and your own home... less hospital-y, but with the reassurance of trained staff on hand to support and monitor you, and get you the care you need should complications arise.  Seems ideal to me!  (Having a lot of stuff done to our house right now, so it's a bit "building site-y", can't imagine trying to relax and birth a baby in the middle of it!)

It's definitely "buyer beware" I think.... it's not just the facility itself you need to be comfortable with, it's the policies, procedures, the choices they offer...  Sobering thought: the US spends more on maternal care than any other country, but it's still the riskiest of all the developed nations for giving birth.  I suspect that has something (a lot?) to do with the high rate of c-sections.... 1 in 3 and rising?!

We have maternity wards at the hospitals, usually one floor is the maternity ward/babies.  Most women only stay for like 2 days unless there are complications, but it's very common for someone's mom to move in for a while.  We currently live in a duplex and they just had a baby next door.  Her sister stayed with her for several months and then there were other family members here for about a week after the birth.

To be honest for most people, extended care is just not affordable if it is not medically necessary, so someone like me would just go home and have my mom come over.  My co-worker was joking about their itemized hospital bill for their daughter.  You are paying for each disposable diaper!  Many women bring their own baby supplies to the hospital and have the nurses use them instead.  But health care and health insurance in this country is a whole other issue...

In most hospitals in this area, the traditional "maternity ward" morphed long ago into birthing center type places.  They were that way before my oldest was born, and that was fourteen years ago.  All the furniture (including the bed) is very home-like, there's a couch or recliner for dad, etc.  They're nothing at all like a traditional hospital room.

There are birthing centers not associated with hospitals here in the US, but I bet they are less common than in the UK. The ones in hospitals are still hospitals, just nicer looking. Wink

I think using a birthing center is still considered a bit "hippieish" in many places unfortunately.  When/If I have a child I'll be looking for one of the centers near but not attached to a hospital.

We have maternity wards too, but birth centres are different.  It's not in a hospital at all.  I will see if I can find one near me and have a look round it and I can tell you what it's like.

Odd that it's considered hippie-ish.... I don't know anyone here who sees them that way.  Home births yes... I thought of them as hippie-ish myself  until relatively recently.  I sort of still feel that way, but I'm also starting to think... how can I put it.... maybe hippies aren't always crazy and/or wrong??!
