I am glad your niece is OK.  I agree with the others--this dog could very well be serious trouble.

Glad your niece is doing good.

On my 12th birthday our dog bit me on my eye lid.  His name was chucky he was half pitbull and don't know, he slept on the beds and when he did sleep on the bed he would sleep like a human, he would crawl from the end of the bed under the blanket until he reached the pillow lay his head down and sleep under the blanket like that.

Well after my party I went to lay down in my bed Chucky was sleeping in my bed and I went over him like I always did, and as soon as I did and turned my head towards him he bit me, He got me on my eye lid but they wouldn't put stitches in.  I didn't blame the dog I I have always blamed myself for that. I always figured it was my fault some how.

    Hope your niece gets well.

    Re: Dog bite... what happened?

I am well aware that any dog can bite.  I am however concerned that a golden retreiver did the damage.  As Ann stated is was an inappropriate response for any civilized dog.  I am concerned since the temperments of goldens seem to be more of a  cr#p shoot since backyard breeding and other commercial enterprizes have entered the picture.

The temperment as described in the breed standard calls for a biddble dog with a soft mouth.  This animal clearly never learned bite inhibition appropriately.  Dogs can remove an earring.  Dogs in pain turn their heads away from owners checking for damage.  Nature verses nuture aside, this dog needs to be managed with more caution.  If there is a medical issue and as the dog ages, problems may occur with more frequency.

I think her niece has a golden, but the dog the bit her does not seem to be a golden: "The dog is some sort of mix approx 80 lbs "black and white" dog."

    Re: Dog bite... what happened?

I tried to respond last night, accidentally hit something that sent me "back" lost my entire post. I didn't have the patience to retype it up.

First of all thank you for all the wonderful wishes!!  I will let my niece know about all the support she's receiving and good thoughts towards her recovery.  She's tossing back some good pain meds and with her eye swollen shut... has been spending most of her time asleep.  Poor thing!!  She loves dogs, and would love a snuggle from Miss Maghee and the German Shepherds.  She is particularly fond of my two monsters ... so, I'm sure she'd love yours :)

I don't know what is up yet, I'm waiting to hear how the conversation with the owners of the dog went. I'll let you know when I hear something.  Obviously this dog was failed in some way by his people and sadly the dog will be the one to be blamed.  I'm with those who have said there were potentially many warning signs that were ignored... or not fully realized through ignorance.  It's terrible my niece, who is a dog lover, had to be the one to show them where they've failed their dog.

Odds are he should have been put away, like Lori said. ... that's the first thing to do if your dog is a resource guarder.  Maybe improper bite inhibition, or an accident, miscalculation on the dogs part, Jennie.  Yet, you know this about Emma and Willow, Lori, and take proper steps to prevent an accident.  You don't set your dog up to fail.  That part was missing here.

Thanks Sally, yes, MRV, she was bit by a mix of some sort.  Her Golden is very "Golden" lol mellow, laid back and patient.  Logan is sharper than their Golden and she's been around him since he was a pup and has always been respectful and loving towards my dogs.  As Anne said, there was probably a reason behind this, it was just a very inappropriate response.

Thanks so much again to everyone for their thoughts.  I'm so sorry for my niece and worried about how she will feel about dogs in the future. I'll be seeing her with my crew at Thanksgiving, I am hoping she will be pleased to see them

I don't think anyone in my family blames the dog... this was most obviously owner negligence, however at the end of the day, once the swelling goes down she will be seeing a plastic surgeon to try to repair the damage....

    Re: Dog bite... what happened?

I just wanted to update everyone, my niece is continuing to improve.  Most of the stitches are out and her eye is healing well. They will be making an appointment with the plastic surgeon after the rest are removed.  So far no infection, so that's the really great news, they had warned if infection started be prepared for her to spend several days admitted to the hospital if it set in.  We are very happy that she's seeming to heal up fairly easily.  She also seems to have full vision.  Thank you SO much for all your wonderful thoughts.

No update in regards to the dog or the people who own him... apparently they haven't gotten back in touch at all with them. Not even to check on my nieces condition.  I'm guessing they are either idiots or scared.  I'm hoping for the later.

     Thank you SO much again!!

such good news on your niece's condition!!!  Thanks for the update.

Ummm, I'm thinking the owners of this dog would need to file a claim against their Homeowner's insurance to pay for your niece's hospital care, no??  Some "friend" to not even call to check on her...

    Re: Dog bite... what happened?

Somehow I missed this thread!  I'm so sorry this happened to your niece Lani, and I'm glad to hear that her recovery has been going well.  I was bit in/around the eye by my family's dog when I was 4, but she had just been spayed and was on drugs and recovering.  I had stitches, and you can't even tell it ever happened today.  Hopefully there will be no permanent scarring for your niece, and I'll be keeping her in my thoughts.
