Fenced In!

YaY! Hubby plugged one of the holes in our back yard fence last evening!

4 foot high chain link fence has never been any problem in the past - it always kept George (Australian Shepherd) & DJ (boston terrier/minpin) within safe & secure bounds. But not so with Coco, a very high energy german short hair/weimaraner mix who is seemingly able to leap tall buildings in a single bound with enough motivation And it seems CATS are definitely enough motivation for her!

The neighbors directly to the east of us are very afraid of dogs. It took them a good long time to come to accept George after we moved in, & after awhile they did come to admire him from the other side of the fence. But after Georgie passed away, the neighbors are not nearly as tolerant of Coco, who is much bigger than George was. Also much younger & more rambunctious. And of course able to leap tall buildings, as well as fences.

So yeah, the relationship between the neighbors & us has pretty much changed for the worse since Coco decided to jump the fence one lovely fall afternoon to chase after the stray cat the neighbors wife happened to be petting on her lap.

Since I try very hard to be a good responsible pet owner & try to be understanding of neighbors, Coco was not allowed in the back yard without being tethered after that episode, which, BTW, brought a VERY angry neighbor spitting & sputtering out of his house in defense of his wife!

But I really don't like doing that. I'm just the kind of dog owner who likes to be able to open the back door & let the dogs out to do their business & run & play for awhile rather than having to leash them everytime they go outdoors.

There was only one 3 foot wide section of 6 foot tall privacy fence missing between our yard & the neighbors, & hubby finally filled that gap last evening! I'm soooo happy! I'm able to let the dogs out now without having to restrain Coco further. Even tho we don't have a very large back yard, they're still able to run & run chasing after each other! And I no longer have to shuffle out in bathrobe & slippers to let her do her business in the cold mornings!

We still need to put sections of privacy fence to the west & on both gates, which hubby will slowly but surely get around to, but Coco has never seemed a bit interested in jumping over the chain link in those areas, perhaps because it's on an upward slope in that direction & she would have a harder time getting over it, & since there's no motivation she just doesn't bother trying.

A Great Day at the River!

Hubby & I & the dogs spent the day at our place on the river yesterday. It's only a 45 minute or an hour drive from home, so we love spending week-ends, holidays, family celebrations & any other free time we have up there. Just a place to relax, have fun, get out of the city & let the dogs RUN full out! You know ... family, friends, food & FUN!

My daughter was very financially strapped after her divorce so her & her two kids lived there for about a year & just moved out a few weeks ago. So we're now in the process of generally cleaning up/fixing up & doing lots & lots of raking!

that'll be me doing all the hard work, lol! I'm holding DJ on my lap, but he didn't stay long, he was pretty frightened riding on there with me

The dogs always have such a great time up there! Coco runs like a gazelle! And they're both so exhausted after we get home.

Golden Limping

Hi everyone - I am new to this site but would love your knowledgeable input.

My 3 yr old golden seems fine all day - very active, acting great, and wants to play - but the last few nights she has been limping after she's been laying down. Once she is up and walking a few steps, she seems fine again. At first I thought she hurt her paw and didn't want to put pressure on it, but I couldn't find anything wrong.

Dogs and Rituals

Those of us who cohabitate with dogs know that they thrive on ritual. Doing the same thing the same way over and over again. I am sure an animal behaviorist would have us realize that it is conditioning; the dog is responding to the circumstance over and over again. If it is a favorable circumstance then the behavior is reinforced to repeat over and over again.

For those who have read a few of my previous entries, I have mentioned that dogs thrive on what they can count on. It is part of their job and how they are fulfilled each day, mentally and physically. However, there are many small things that go on each day that you may have never noticed, or become accustomed to, that are also ritual.

At my house, it is the greeting of my husband each afternoon after work. This ritual is big, rowdy and ridiculous. But all involved (yes him too) seem to enjoy it. My husband will come in the door promptly around 5:20 where he is greeted with all of the enthusiasm of Christmas morning, but this is every day. There is jumping, licking, running, knocking over whatever is in the vicinity, and sniffing all on a grand scale. Then my chocolate lab tears through the house searching for an appropriate offering. She franticly finds a favorite toy, rawhide bone or her blanket and races back to present it to my husband. She will jump on our bed with it, catapulting whatever sleeping cat was there having it run for its very life. Hershey's tail wags so hard that she could throw her back out all the while snorting like a wild rhino while presenting the offering. Meanwhile my yellow lab is jumping in place with a huge smile on his face. Husband will accept the offering, then the licking begins. She licks his clothes and face and gathers information about his day and shows massive affection. Labs have a way of boosting human self esteem, don't they? Once this 5 minute ritual is complete, then all included can carry on.

Another one involves the yellow lab. For a few months before we were harshly persuaded by our vet to have him lose weight, there was the "cheese drawer ritual". Whenever my husband would approach the refrigerator, my yellow lab, who could hear this from a thousand miles away and in a deep coma, would come running to the kitchen, jumping up and down and spinning in the air. Then my husband would respond with, "Who wants some cheese, does Beau like cheese?". Then there would be a small display of obedience commands, loose and incorrectly performed but rewarded anyway with the dispersal of cheese. As you can imagine, that was a hard ritual to break. Now, as the owners of our own house and refrigerator, we have to silently sneak into the cheese drawer to retrieve what we need and we never say the word. Beau does not understand why that ritual had to end, so we try to spare him the exposure to it.

The last one I will bore you with is a nightly ritual. The chocolate dog will jump into the bed and go to sleep the last 30 minutes or so before she has to go to her kennel and the lights are turned off. She stretches out the length of a surf board between us and then "dog piles" her head, with a hard deliberate thud, on one of our legs. But don't touch her or the whole "I have to find the right spot, sniff and turn circles in place, and settle down" thing starts over again. Then when my husband says, "time to get in your kennel", she will act as if she is in the soundest sleep available to dogs, and totally ignore him. She has to be "woken up" to get in her kennel. This is especially amusing after the spectacle of energy that happens each afternoon when he gets home.

I would love to hear about a few of your rituals. I never tire of dog stories. I truly enjoy telling them and hearing them. Just ask my kind, indulgent family and friends.

We got our sheltie about 6 months ago and just recently noticed a tatto on her inner thigh that says "lap dog".

She is a mid-size sheltie. She is 5 years old. We got her from a lady who had 2 children and worked a lot and didn't want to leave her alone so much.

The lady we got her from said she got her from a breeder who wanted her back when she didn't want her anymore. But the lady "gave" her to us instead of returning her to the breeder.

Belle (my dog's name) is very gentle & timid. She goes as far away from humans as possible. We try to include her in everything we do. We take her with us when we go out most of the time. We are very loving to her.

Does anyone have any idea as to what in the world the tatto means and why she is tattooed at all?
